From information about Beyond the Narrative

Beyond the Narrative was born out of lived experience.

Their founder, Javel Watt, grew up navigating trauma, exclusion, and systems that too often failed to see potential. His journey from childhood instability, through gangs, incarceration, and violence, to transformation, leadership, and reform is at the heart of Beyond the Narrative.

Javel sees potential in others and himself. What started as one person’s vision to turn pain into purpose has grown into a collective movement. Beyond the Narrative was created to challenge the stories society places on people, showing instead that every experience can be a foundation for growth, innovation, and impact.

So they aim to turn lived experience into impact, innovation, and change by helping design creative, socially impactful solutions across justice, health, and community, powered by lived experience, rooted in innovation. They have the determination to prove that people are not broken, they are becoming.

Let's look at one of their workshops - Spot the Opps.

Spot the Opps is their enterprise education programme — using card game/board game workshops, and courses to help people turn challenges into opportunities and ideas into action.

It is an interactive programme focused on teaching entrepreneurial thinking. It helps participants recognise that their life experiences have given them transferable skills that can be channelled into business, products, or services.

Through games and guided facilitation, they learn how to generate ideas, develop them into business models, and understand the structures of enterprise, from sole trader to CICs and charities.

The programme is designed to build confidence, encourage creativity, and show young people that they already have the foundations to pursue entrepreneurship.

Spot the Opps is available as:

  • 1-Day Workshop. Play the fast-paced Spot the Opps card game, generating business ideas from everyday objects. Select two ideas and work with facilitators to develop them into basic business outlines. Learn about different business structures (LTD, CIC, charity, sole trader). Identify transferable skills from personal experiences.
  • 5-Day Course. Play the full Spot the Opps board game to generate and refine ideas. Choose and pitch one or two business ideas to develop into a full business plan. Deep dive into what it means to start and run a business. Leave with a clear pathway, mentoring options, and potential future funding opportunities.

Then there are other initiatives:
Ready to Rise. An employability programme that supports young people in building the confidence, skills, and mindset needed to step into work, training, or education. It goes beyond standard employability training by blending practical job-seeking tools with personal development, wellbeing, and digital skills — including the use of AI for CV-building, mock interviews, and personalised career planning.
Conflict Resolution & Courageous Conversations. Designed to give participants the confidence and tools to handle disagreements and difficult dialogue constructively. Conflict is part of everyday life, but without the right skills, it can escalate, damage relationships, or hold people back. This programme creates a safe, structured space where participants learn about the roots of conflict, develop empathy and listening skills, and practice turning tension into growth.
